La Bella deli and restaurant just outside Riversdale on the N2 may look like your average farm stall when seen from the highway, but once you step inside you may be convinced that you’ve entered a trendy deli in Stellenbosch or Cape Town. La Bella deli forms part of the Baleia wines family and the farm stall is adjacent to the Baleia wine and olive oil tasting room where you can taste the estate’s products in style. Both the wine and olive oil are also sold in the deli. We found La Bella to be a refreshing alternative to overcrowded, traditional (most of which have become very expensive!) farm stalls on the N2 on the Garden Route. It certainly is comparable to some of the best family-friendly deli’s in the Western Cape.
The outside play area
The outside space of the deli is not that large but still provides ample room for children to run around on the medium-sized lawn or play on the jungle gym and swings. The play area is a great place for the kids to burn some extra energy they may have from sitting in the car all day. Just behind the play area is a combined bunny coop and bird cage. What we liked about the outdoor space is that the outside tables are located right next to the jungle gym and swings so parents can closely watch their kids at play. The tables have umbrellas to keep away the sun but on rainy days you will have to sit inside where there is not as much for the children to do as outside.
The restaurant has a great menu which we did not find overpriced and the breakfast comes highly recommended. When our food arrived the children’s breakfast was already separated onto two plastic plates (We ordered an adult breakfast for the kids although the restaurant has a great kids menu – our kids really do love a good brunch!).
The inside of the deli with its modern decor is a shopper’s dream. Among a beautiful variety of decor products that the deli stocks you will find the latest in the Biggie Best Range. A comfy leather couch in front of the fireplace with a TV broadcasting all the important sport matches looks super inviting and is the ideal place to watch a Wimbledon or Springbok rugby match. As mentioned, inside there may not be as much for the children to do and they may get into mischief running around in the shop area.
The shopping area in the deli has beautiful products and sells from Baleia wines and olive oils to bath salts plus plenty of home decor and trinkets. At the back of the deli you can buy individual cake slices and freshly baked pies over the counter including chicken and bacon, bobotie and butternut pies. We got pies for takeaways and can definitely recommend the beef steak pie which is particularly well-spiced and flavourful.
We recommend La Bella deli and restaurant on the N2 if you’re looking for a refreshing pit stop on the way to a seaside town on the Garden Route. La Bella is a great spot to have breakfast, light lunches or grab a good old takeaway pie. Mommies, be warned though that there is most certainly something in the shop that you will want (and have) to buy!
